Police in Stellenbosch arrested two suspects on Friday morning, 16 October, in connection with an alleged vehicle hijacking reported earlier in Milnerton. The arrest and the recovery of the hijacked vehicle was made possible thanks to security cameras installed in the area.

“We received an alert message from Stellenbosch police at around 10:20 on Friday about a suspect vehicle that had been picked up by one of the license plate recognition (LPR) cameras installed on one of the town’s main entrance routes. A few minutes later, another LPR camera in the Klapmuts area picked up the same vehicle driving past it,” explains Verena Hulme, Cape Town North district manager at Fidelity ADT.

Two Fidelity ADT armed response officers, she adds, were busy with farm visits in the Klapmuts area at the time and they were alerted to be on the lookout for the vehicle in question as it was moving in their direction.

“They soon spotted the suspected hijacked vehicle and proceeded to follow it at a distance, while relaying information about its movement to the SAPS. After a while they were able to box in the vehicle and force it to stop. The vehicle’s occupants were taken into custody and the vehicle was impounded.”

“Well done to everyone for their quick response in tracking down this vehicle. LPR cameras have again proven to be a vital tool in the fight against crime. Please report any stolen or suspect vehicles to the police as soon as possible so that the information can be loaded onto the LPR network,” says Hulme.
